Veerling’s RBI single at 10th spot, beat Phillies to Blue Jays

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Matt Weirling had five hits, including a game-winning RBI single, in 10th to rally the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night.

Realmuto combined as Philadelphia broke a five-game losing streak to stay 2 1/2 games ahead of Milwaukee for the final NL wild-card spot.

“It doesn’t get much better than that,” Weirling said. “Definitely it was needed. We peeed all night.”

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hits a three-run homer for the Blue Jays, who lead the AL wild-card standings.

Bryson Stott led 10th with a sacrificial bunt to move pinch-runner Yarrow Munoz to third. Adam Simber (10-6) hit Gene Segura before running to Dalton Guthrie on four pitches to load the base.

Weirling hit a 1-1 chopper in the middle of five Blue Jays on the field, then raised his right fist high in the air as he ran past the crowd by his teammates between first and second. The celebration became so furious that one of his companions tore the shirt of Veeralinga from his body.
