Trigger warning: This story is serious so read with your own discretion. Jeffrey Demer is considered one of America’s most dreaded serial killers. Eventually pleading guilty to raping, manslaughter, mutilation and consuming multiple victims, he was sentenced to 15 consecutive life sentences in 1996, but only lived to serve three years. His story is the basis for the Netflix documentary series Conversations with a Killer: Jeffrey Asphalt Tapesand Netflix scripted drama series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story starring Evan Peters (American Horror Story) as asphalt. The latter looks to explore this monstrous man from the perspective of those who were victims of him and the racist, systemic failures “that enabled America’s most infamous serial killer to continue his murderous spree for more than a decade, ” Per summary. Otherwise known as the Milwaukee Cannibals, Dahmer managed to capture after 13 years his first victimSteven Hicks, in 1978. However, how Jeffrey Demar died, and whether the families of his victims felt that justice had been served.
How did Jeffrey Demar die?
How did Jeffy Dahmer die? On November 28, 1994, Dahmer was beaten to death by a fellow prisoner, Christopher Schwerer. Both men were held at the Columbia Correctional Facility in Wisconsin. Wisconsin was the first to abolish the death penalty in 1853, so despite his heinous crimes, Dahmer did not receive the death penalty (though he wished his own death. More on that later). Scarver, who was serving a 25-year sentence for an armed robbery-turned-murder, arrived in prison in 1992 at about the same time as Dahmer. The safety of the serial killer was a major concern. for prison staff, new York Times It was reported at the time that Dahmer spent his first year in prison under protective isolation. As the state’s most notorious killers, officials believed that killing him could give a criminal a “respectable place in the prison world.” The authorities later found it safe to integrate it into a population of 622 prisoners. In July 1992, an attempt was made on Dahmer’s life. One prisoner took a homemade plastic knife and unsuccessfully tried to slit Dahmer’s throat. No one was hurt and the prison staff believed it to be an isolated incident.
Dahmer was known to harass his fellow prisoners. According to Scarver, the serial killer used to taunt other inmates with prison food, which he had drizzled over to look like severed limbs, like blood on a ketchup packet. “He would put them in places where people would be,” said Scarver. New York Post in 2015. “He crossed the border with some people—prisoners, prison workers. Some people who are in prison repent—but he wasn’t one of them.”
Due to Dahmer’s behavior, Scarver tried to stay away from him, but always kept a news clipping in his pocket detailing the cannibal’s crimes. When Scarver suspects that Dahmer had pushed him in the back, Scarver is snapped. He grabbed a metal bar from the weight room and faced Dahmer about his crimes, “I asked him if he did ’cause I was so disgusted. He was shocked. Yes, he was,” Scarver explained. Post, “He looked for the door very quickly. I blocked him.” From two swings of the bar to Dahmer’s head, that was all. His skull was crushed and Dahar was pronounced dead an hour after reaching the hospital. He was 34 years old. “He’s dead. I put his head down,” Scarver said of the murder.
Errol Lindsay’s sister, Rita Isbell, one of Dahmer’s final victims, said she had suspected Dahmer’s murder in prison. new York Times reported that for two years, she had received phone calls from men claiming to be prison inmates, promising that Dahmer would “be taken care of.” She said the callers told her: “You don’t know me. I’m here with Jeffrey Dahmer. Don’t worry. We’ll take care of it.” She continued, “I wouldn’t say I wanted it to happen, but Jeffrey broke my family.”
How was Jeffrey Demar caught?
Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested on September 8, 1996, after three men were approached with $100 for posing for nude photographs. Tracy Edwards, 32, agreed and upon arriving at Dahmer’s apartment, she saw a foul odor and box of hydrochloric acid, which Dahmer had asked for cleaning. Dahmer attempts to handcuff Edwards’ wrists together, but only manages to secure one and brandishes a knife and tells him to be naked. After five gruesome hours, Edwards managed to escape by pretending to need to go to the bathroom and punched Dahmer’s guard when he was down, causing the serial killer to lose his balance. Edwards flagged off two police officers, saying a “freak” pulled a knife at him. Edwards accompanied officers back to Asphalt’s apartment where they discovered Polaroids of human bodies in the bedroom and beheaded in the refrigerator. “These are real,” said one officer, showing the pictures to another. When Damer saw what the officer was holding, he attacked them and tried to protest against arrest, but Dahmer was overpowered. As he was pinned to the floor, he is said to have uttered the words: “I must die for what I did.”
Upon a more extensive search of Dahmer’s apartment, a team from Milwaukee’s Criminal Investigation Bureau discovered four severed heads in the kitchen, seven skulls in Dahmer’s bedroom, blood dripping into the refrigerator, and two human hearts. He also had an entire torso in his freezer and a myriad of other gruesome discoveries. “It was more like destroying someone’s museum than an actual crime scene,” Chief Medical Examiner celebrated at that time,

Dahmer eventually developed a schizotypal personality. The disorder, was diagnosed with psychotic disorder and borderline personality disorder, but was deemed prudent to face trial legally.
Dahmer initially took 15 . pleaded not guilty to murder count on September 10, 1991, but changed his plea to guilty but insane in January 1992, which removed the need for criminal trial, but proceedings would instead focus on his discretion. Unlike other criminal trials, a decision did not need to be unanimous. 10 out of 12 jurors would have to agree on the defendant’s mental state in order to stay a guilty verdict. “In Dahmer’s case, he admitted that he knew his actions were wrong, so the question became whether he was able to control himself,” psychologist Dr. Holly Schiff told A&E True Crime, By opting to plead insanity, “Dahmer had the burden to prove to the jurors”. [since 10 out of 12 must agree] that he was insane at the time of the murders.” For three weeks, jurors heard details of Dahmer’s corrupt crimes and relatives of his victims described their loss. Upon receiving 15 consecutive life sentences, Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Lawrence C. Gram Jr. can serve the maximum sentence, Dahmer told the court, adding that he wished he could be sentenced to death for the “catastrophe” for which he was responsible, new York Times informed at that time.
