Apple says iOS 16’s new haptic keyboard option may affect battery life

iOS 16 introduced a new haptic feedback option for the default keyboard. When enabled, the iPhone vibrates slightly after tapping each key while typing, providing physical confirmation that the key was pressed. This feature is a useful addition to the iPhone, but keep in mind that Apple says it can potentially affect battery life.

“Turning on keyboard haptics may affect your iPhone’s battery life,” Apple said supporting document Published last week. Apple doesn’t provide any additional details, so it’s unclear how much battery life this feature uses. Note that Low Power Mode doesn’t disable haptic feedback, so the only option for users concerned about potential battery life impact is to keep the feature turned off.

Any software feature on the iPhone clearly consumes battery life, but Apple felt it’s notable for apparently haptic feedback.

To enable haptic feedback for keyboards, open the Settings app, tap Sounds & Haptics β†’ Keyboard Feedback, and turn on Haptic. The same toggle switch can be used to turn the feature off at any point. This feature is available on iPhone 8 and newer with iOS 16 or later and uses Taptic Engine inside iPhones.
